SOUTHDOWN

This garden is a c.5m wide garden, accessed through the rear of a terraced house, which tapers towards the top end on a gentle gradient. The client wanted various seating areas throughout the garden in order to accommodate sun and shade at different times of the day. He wanted two very different kinds of garden - a 'summer' sun garden with a lawn, and a more tropical broad-leafed garden with a pond (similar to others I have designed) - which ultimately prompted the division of the plot into two parts on two levels, separated by a pond. The garden would also draw partial inspiration from the Devonshire farm on which he grew up, including elements of steep-sided valleys, deep stream beds and woodland.

Go to SOUTHDOWN (the making of) to see how the garden evolved.
